A rescue operation has been successfully finished in the Mordvinov Bay in the Sea of Okhotsk – the last on of 54 fishermen was transported to the shore at 4:20 PM (Sakhalin time). Nobody of the rescued fishermen needed medical aid.
Today’s afternoon the Crisis Management Center of the Emergency Ministry’s Sakhalin Region Directorate received a distress signal about fishermen stranded on an ice floe in the Mordvinov Bay. There was a 10-meter-wide crack in an ice floe, but by the end of the rescue operation it got 100-meter-wide. The ice floe was several kilometers long.
Response crews were dispatched to the scene immediately: the V.A. Polyakov Sakhalin SAR Team, Korsakov Emergency Rescue Team and inspectors of the State Small Vessels Inspectorate – 17 people and 9 units of equipment in all. They used an inflated boat and Khivus hovercraft to get the fishermen ashore.
Before that the Emergency Ministry had warned about possible breakaway of ice floes in the Mordvinov Bay via mass media and text messages, but it did not stop many of fishermen. Such negligence can cause tragedies.
