Open blaze in the shopping center has been put out by now and firemen are watering the building. Suppression of the fire in Sindika shopping center was complicated from the very beginning by out-of-the-way location of the fire source and by swift spread of the blaze due to a lot of combustible materials inside the building. Firemen directed all their efforts to find the source of the fire and check the building to make sure that nobody had been left inside.
By the moment first fire and rescue units had arrived, the fire had engulfed 1,000 sq. meters and the pillar of smoke could be seen from kilometers around.
It was hard to find the source of the fire due to thick smoke that covered up to 10 thousand sq. meters. The had started in a storehouse of construction materials, where paints, lacquer and gas cylinders were kept as well. The situation was worsened by the proximity of the underground parking lot with a lot of cars.
The fire spread to the roof and other premises via vent shafts and covered 35 thousand sq. meters.
The firemen were evacuated from the building as it became dangerous to work inside. The perimeter was divided into sections and the fire was suppressed from the outside using aircraft. Fighting the fire from the roof was dangerous all the way, and as there were no people inside, there was no need to run such a risk.
The number of people battling the fire was increased by three times to reach almost 300 people. The fire was announced the third-class fire. At the moment, firemen are watering the building.
