A Mil Mi-8 helicopter belonging to the Emergency Ministry has taken off from the city of Khabarovsk to the Shantar Islands in the Sea of Okhotsk to rescue a bowhead whale from a sand bar. The animal got stranded near the island of Bolshoy Shantar during a low tide.
The helicopter is carrying a team of rescuers of the Emergency Ministry’s Far Eastern Regional SAR Team, employees of the Khabarovsk Territory Ministry for Natural Resources, a task forces of the Emergency Ministry’s Khabarovsk Territory Directorate. Together with workers of the reserve and ecologists they are going to assess the situation on site and look at the options they have to help the whale.
The information that the bowhead whale was trapped on a sand bar near Bolshoy Shantar Island, Tuguto-Chumikansky District was received by the Emergency Ministry’s Khabarovsk Territory Crisis Management Center in the afternoon. Employees of the reserve, scientists and ecologists helped the animal by pouring it with water using monoblock pumps. The situation is complicated because the high tide is expected only next morning and the weather is bad for flying.
